Troubleshooting Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air

If the furnace is running and is blowing out cold air this is uncommon, but it does happen. There can be a number of causes for the furnace or the heating pump to be blowing cold air. First it is important to mention that sometimes it can take the furnace a few minutes to push the warm air through the air duct system. Keep in mind that before the furnace comes on, there is cold air sitting in the air ducts. As the blower begins to push the warm air through the air ducts, the cold air will come out first. This process can take around five minutes before you can feel the warm air. Before assuming there is a problem, give the furnace enough time to create the warm air and enough time to push out the cold followed by the warm air. However if warm air never flows out, and your furnace has been running for about 30 minutes, there is a problem.

Heat Pump Reversing Valve

One culprit as to why your furnace is blowing cold air is that the reversing valve has broken or has failed. The reversing valve is responsible for switching the system from heating to cooling, depending on the season. The reversing valve can be worn out, stuck or damaged. If the furnace isn’t blowing warm air, have the reversing valve inspected.

Heat Pump Freezing Up

Occasionally the heat pump can become frozen. In most cases it is temporary due to condensation that can develop on a furnace as the condensation turned to frost. This is natural and can occur, which is why a furnace does have a defrost mode. In some cases you may need to help defrost the unit manually. You can pour warm water over the frost if you see ice on the unit outside. If the furnace is producing cold air when it is running, the cause can be determined by a HVAC technician.
