Massachusetts has its fair share of rain. Since most homeowners require outdoor air conditioners, many people have questions about how rain affects a condenser as a result. Today, we at Ambient Heating & Air Conditioning would like to discuss the impact of rain has on your outdoor unit.
Can Rain Damage an Air Conditioner
Placed outside is half of all central air conditioning systems. Because vital pieces of your HVAC system are completely open to the elements, they can be vulnerable to outside damage. Fortunately, they are designed to take on the abuse, but like any machine, it can have it share of problems. Copper, strong plastics, aluminum, and other materials are used to construct the modern outdoor condensers and the parts inside. Because of this, any small amount of rain we get here won’t do any damage to your outdoor condenser. However, you do not want to just ignore your air conditioner unit all together. Debris can be sent flying due to some storms that can truly kick up severe wind. Take the time to look at your condenser after any such weather events occur. Any visible debris protruding from the machine should be pulled out to help keep the machine running, and only if it is safe to do so.
Should You Cover AC Unit when it Rains?
Less is always better when it comes to taking care of your condenser. To help protect it from the rain, we have some proactive homeowners who think wrapping their condenser with a tarp. Because it is never wise, we recommend that you avoid putting a cover or wrap on your condenser. It is too easy for rain drops to find themselves congregating in your condenser without ventilation. Water never has the chance to evaporate or dry up if in the event the condenser has a cover over. As a result, mold will become another issue you have to deal with. Allow your condenser to breathe and ditch the cover.
Routine Maintenance on an Air Conditioner
Scheduling routine maintenance throughout the season is the best way to take care of your air conditioner. It is highly recommended to schedule an HVAC tune-up at the start of spring, and the start of fall as well. One of our HVAC experts will clean and inspect every part of your air conditioning system during a tune-up. We make sure to go through everything with a fine-tooth comb to make sure you and your family stay safe and cool for months to come from the outdoor unit to the indoor air filter.
