What to Check when Heater is Not Working?

– Thermostat: The first place you should look if your heating isn’t working is the thermostat. Make sure that is has the power it needs to run whether this is from batteries or from a circuit breaker for thermostats that are hard wired into the house. You also need to make sure that the settings are right and that the heat is turned on.
– Filter: Another thing that can cause your furnace to not work is a dirty filter. The filter ensures that your furnace is getting the air that it needs to stay cool enough to run. When the filter is dirty, your furnace could be overheating and that’s why you aren’t staying warm.
– Circuit Breaker: The circuit breaker that gives your furnace power might be the problem as well. If the circuit breaker has been tripped somehow, your furnace won’t have the electricity it needs to power on. Make sure your circuit breaker doesn’t need to be reset.
– Furnace Door: For most furnaces, they have a safety switch that doesn’t allow the furnace to turn on and work if the furnace door isn’t securely in place. Make sure that your furnace door is snug and that it is closed enough to push that button in completely.
– Power Switch: Most furnaces have a switch near them that will resemble a light switch. It is important to make sure this switch hasn’t been turned off somehow. If this is the case, switching it back on is an easy fix that should get your furnace back up and running.
– Gas: If your furnace uses natural gas to heat your home, you need to make sure it’s getting the fuel it needs to run. Make sure the gas valve hasn’t been shut off, inhibiting your furnace from operating like it should.
