Is your Agawam Massachusetts Air Conditioner Ready to Retire for the Cool, Fall Weather & Winter Seasons?

When the weather changes so do many things in your home. This is the time of year that you start to get decorations out for holidays and put away all the summer gear. You get the box of sweaters and pants down and make sure your appliances are ready. One of the appliances that needs to have some attention with the change of weather is the air conditioning unit.

Ambient Heating and Air Conditioning has some tips and ideas on what you can do to prepare for this upcoming season.

FYI – If you have had your unit maintained by a professional throughout the year then this process of preparing will be simpler. This is one of the benefits of having your unit serviced, because you get any small repairs and service done to the unit before there is trouble!

FILTERS: In order to have your unit running efficiently you should have the air filters changed on a regular basis. This is especially true when the weather changes and you are about to switch from cooling your home to heating it. Take time to remove the old filters and change them out for new ones when the weather is about to change and cool off. When the filters are new and fresh, this allows the maximum amount of air to circulate therefore letting your unit run efficiently. This will also keep extra dust and allergens from going back into the air in your home.

WASH: When the weather changes most people will stop using the air conditioner to cool the home and start to use the heater. This is a great time to turn off power to the unit and wash it off. You want to stop the power so that it does not accidently start running when you are washing it off. Take a hose and wash off the part of the unit that is outside and make sure that any dirt and debris is washed away. Then make sure that the unit is completely dry before you power it back up.

COVER: If you have a unit that is outdoors and exposed to the weather you may need to cover some of the pipes. Look around the unit and see what needs to be covered. You can use some foam padding and duct tape to attach to the pipe. This will keep the pipes insulated and safe from the possible freezing weather.
