An air conditioner works hard all summer long, creating the cool air to keep our homes cool and comfortable. Like any other machine, an air conditioner will wear down and develop different repair needs. An air conditioner will also develop certain symptoms that can help the homeowner know when the air conditioner is in need of repair. It is important for the home to recognize these symptoms and know when to have the air conditioner inspected and repaired. Ambient Heating & Air Conditioning will share some of the classic signs your air conditioner is in need of repair.
AC Blowing Warm Air
If you notice your home is feeling a bit warmer, put your hands over the air vent. If you feel the air conditioner is blowing warm air, your air conditioner has a problem. Warm air is a clear sign that there is a problem with the cooling cycle. The problem may be as simple as a dirty evaporator coil. However, the problem may be more severe such as a refrigerant leak or the compressor needs to be repaired or replaced. If your air conditioner is blowing warm air, it needs professional attention.
Weak AC Air Flow
When the home feels warmer and you check your air vent, you may discover the air flow feels very weak but still cold. When the air flow is weak, this is a sign your air conditioner needs to be repaired. The air conditioner’s blower may be worn out, or you may have a problem with the air ducts. The air ducts may have a leak or has collapsed. Again, the air conditioner will need to have an inspection to determine the cause of the weak air flow.
AC Gives Off a Weird Smell
When the air conditioner is running and there is an odd smell in the air, this can be a sign that there is a problem. A musty or pungent odor may be mold or another type of moisture issue. There may also be a problem with the condensate drainage system. A metallic burn like smell is often an electrical issue or even the motor overheating.
Air Conditioner Making Loud Noises
An air conditioner will make a soft humming noise when it is running. However, if you hear other noises such as hissing, loud banging, or screeching noises this is not good. Hissing often indicates a refrigerant leak. The bang or screech noise points to a mechanical problem. If your air conditioner is making odd noises, turn off the air conditioner and have the unit looked at right away.
Very High Power Bill
If your power bill is much higher than normal, do not ignore it. There could be a number of reasons that can cause the power bill to go up. However, the most demanding appliance or machine in the home is the air conditioner. The air conditioner will make a major impact on your power usage. The air conditioner will use more power when it is under stress and or there is a problem.
