When it comes to heating your home for the winter, heating bills can certainly start to pile up. When your home isn’t energy efficient, you can be wasting a great deal of money on heating costs each month. Ambient Heating & Air Conditioning is here to share some tips to help you save some money on your heating bills all winter long with just a small amount of effort.
What Temperature to Set Thermostat in Winter
Did you know that you can save around 3% on each degree you lower your thermostat in the winter? Just by setting your thermostat at 68 degrees during the day and 55 degrees at night will save you up to 13% on your heating bill each month. You can feel comfortable with the addition of more blankets at night and warmer clothes during the day to help you with the adjustment.
Keep Your Chimney Flue Closed when Not in Use
Many people don’t think about their chimney flue. When it is left open without a fire roaring in your fireplace, it can have the same effect as leaving a window open in your home during the winter. You should also check your dryer vents to make sure it is closing properly to avoid losing warm air that way too.
Circulate Air With Fans
You would be surprised at what a difference the use of your fan can make in keeping your home evenly warmed. If you have ceiling fans, you can reverse the blades so that they turn the opposite way they would in the summer to circulate the warm air around your home. They should be circulating the air upward toward the ceiling.
Leave Vents Uncovered
You may not realize it, but you could have vents that are covered and not allowing the warm air to fill the room. This will not only not allow the warm air to circulate into the room, but it can cause strain on your furnace which could cause problems down the road. Make sure there are no vents covered or restricted in your home. This may include a good deep clean of the vents to make sure there isn’t any debris inside them restricting air flow.
Blinds & Curtains Keep Heat In
Did you know that you can lose up to 25% of your home’s warm air to windows? Keep the curtains and blinds open during the day on any windows that are south facing. When the sun isn’t out and heating your home, you should keep the curtains and blinds closed to help with any heat loss.
